SCHEDULE

_________________________________________________________________

1-19  ETHICS: How Can I Help?  ix-90

________________________________________________________________

Unless otherwise specified, MEET IN PARLIN 104.   +you get up to seven class participation points per class, , sometimes more if you demonstrate good listening, sometimes less if you donÕt. You always get up to four class participation points for (1) bringing the books assigned for that day; (2) a print-out* of that day's section of the website schedule (3) a print-out of your Discussion Board entry from your blog if you made one; and (4), on Tuesdays, a copy of your grades from Blackboard. In other words just for listening and following these instructions every class day you can get 250 points, one-fourth of what you need for an A- in this course.

*Speaking of print-outs, the way to save the most paper and printer supplies is probably to copy the relevant pages into Word, then 'select all" and decrease the size of the font and spacing, and then print, specifying black and white only. If possible, print on both sides of the page. Most important of all, use only recycled paper!

Holi, the festival of colors, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates both the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil on the day of the full moon. On the day of Holi, people celebrate by throwing rang (colored powder) and water on each other, and by taking part in traditional games to the sound of the dhol. The festival tradition of applying colored powder comes from Lord Krishna's complaints to his mother about the contrast between his dark skin and his consort Radha's fair color. His mother applied color to Radha's face to make appear to have the same skin color. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and colds. The playful throwing of the colored powders therefore had a medicinal significance: the colors were traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors due to their benefits on our skin. Originally, the powders that were used to celebrate Holi came from the flowers of trees that blossomed during the Spring, which had bright red flowers. Come out and celebrate this fun-filled festival with HSC for FREE! Everyone is welcome! We will be giving out FREE rang, FREE water balloons, FREE snacks, and FREE t-shirts!

Come listen as PETA vice president Bruce Friedrich faces off against members of the UT Debate Team on this very question!

Bruce Friedrich is vice president of policy for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organization. He has debated meat, fur, and animal-experimentation industry representatives on countless television and radio programs, including NBC's Today show as well as various programs on CNN, the Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and Court TV. He is a frequent contributor to HuffingtonPost.com, and coauthored a book about activism, the widely praised Animal Activist's Handbook (www.animaladvocacybook.com). He also produced the influential PETA film "Meet Your Meat", which is narrated by Alec Baldwin and was viewed more than 1 million times last year alone.

He will face off against University of Texas debate team members Kenny Cauthen and Drew McNeil. Drew and Kenny are debate partners, and just recently competed at the Cross-Examination Debate Association's national tournament where they finished in the top 16 in a pool of over 200 teams.

*The term Òcircle of compassionÓ appears to derive from the writings of two well-known social thinkers, Albert Schweitzer and Albert Einstein. Schweitzer, the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize winner, is best known for his medical work on behalf of the poor in Gabon. Einstein, best known for his work on physics for which he won a Nobel Prize in 1921, was also a frequent writer on social issues.

Until he [sic] extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. -- Albert Schweitzer -- The Philosophy of Civilisation, Tr. by C.T. Campion, New York, Macmillan Co., 1949.

Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. -- Albert Einstein, letter dated 1950, Mathematical circles adieu: A fourth collection of mathematical stories and anecdotes [compiled by] Howard W. Eves, Boston: Prindle, Weber & Schmidt, 1977.
