CLASS PARTICIPATION THIS SEMESTER:

Thanks to Alice, there will be one less printout requested this semester, that of the schedule for the next day.(In fact, Alice has also shown that one can get an A without doing any printouts at all.) Other changes in burnt-orange below:

Daily class participation grades: up to nine points per class, sometimes more if you demonstrate good listening, sometimes less if you don’t. You always get up to seven class participation points for (1) bringing the books assigned for that day; (2) printouts* of that day's section of the website schedule; and (3) a printout of your Discussion Board entry from your blog if you made one; and (4), on Tuesdays, a copy of your grades from Blackboard.

Half way through the semester you get two additional points for putting next to the total points on the copy of your grades an “=” sign and then the letter grade those points are worth according to the course description as in “= C-“ When you do this you raise your points for Tuesdays to seven or more.

You need to print out your copy of the schedule the day before class so that it includes any late changes.

Printing too far in advance or just minutes before class defeats the purpose of this assignment: making you more aware of that day’s assignment. If you are observed printing out just before you will receive no points for any of the printouts.

*Speaking of printouts, the way to save the most paper and printer supplies is apparently to copy the relevant pages into Word; delete the images; then 'select all" and decrease the size of the font and spacing; and then print, specifying black and white only.

Students prepare for class discussion by being on time, by reading the assigned reading and related Discussion Board in advance and by bringing their DB, grades, and schedule printouts, notes, and books to class as described above. There will be no attendance or class participation credit for the first late appearance, -5 points for the second, double the penalty for the third, triple for the fourth, etc. If anyone chooses to open the door for someone who comes late, they will receive the same penalties: no attendance or class participation credit for the first disruption, -5 points for the second, double the penalty for the third, triple for the fourth, etc. As of the second semester our most tardy student will be penalized thirty points the first time he is late this semester and the same penalty will apply to anyone who opens the door for him. Next time it will be sixty points, then 120 points, then 240 points, etc.

DISCUSSION BOARD ENTRIES:

POINTS FOR PERFORMANCES. Students can up to 27 points each for performing the readings alone or with others, either live during class or in a video presented in class. However, simply reading from a printout does not constitute a performance. Points will be determined partly on the basis of how much work each individual put into the performance and partly on the basis of how effective the result is.

POINTS FOR RESEARCH. Students can earn up to 20 ADDITIONAL POINTS for incorporating in their DB entry research generated by the assigned readings. The research must be fully documented in the Chicago footnote style. More points will awarded for print sources not found on the internet.

PENALTIES: Clarification: The penalty for posting after 8 but before midnight is -2, after midnight but before 3:30 AM -4; between 3:30 AM and an hour before class -6. No DB entry will be accepted after that time. The leader is not required to include any posts that appear after midnight, though s/he may choose to do so.

LEADING DISCUSSION THIS SEMESTER:

Those who wish to lead must have their valid DB entry and the magic word "Willing" posted before 8 PM. Expressions of "Willing" after 8 PM will no longer be accepted.

GRADES: Students can still earn up to thirty points for leading class discussion in the usual way. However, they can earn up to fifty points with the experiential learning option.*

Original Course Description: "LEADING CLASS DISCUSSION AT LEAST ONCE IS REQUIRED. THE PENALTY FOR NOT DOING SO IS -45 in one-semester courses (-60 in the second semester of E603)." Those who did not lead last semester will start off with -60 in that category this semester: Lauren, Hongrak, Emily, Sharad

*EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPTION. After demonstrating careful reading of all the DB entries by making an outline of them and uploading it, the leader can choose to replace some or all of the discussion time with one or more experiential learning exercises focused on the themes of that day’s assignment. Experiential learning can earn the leader up to twenty additional points.
