EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

WRITING EXTRA CREDIT: If you want to earn some extra credit by writing you can revise your P3 for word choice and/or conciseness. You could conceivably earn back all the points you missed (now put in the extra credit category). However, each change you make must be an improvement, not merely something different, and certainly not something worse. When you are done you must underline all the changes in the new version of P3 and hand it in a folder with the old P3 and all the other required materials, including my critique. Last date this could be turned in is April 8th if you include it in your P4 folder.

UT leadership image 3-28   Hindu Student Council Campus Holi Festival : 10 Points of Extra Credit: all you need is pictures to prove you were there and got "powdered"

When: Saturday, March 28, 2009 Where: South Mall by the 6 Pack Time: 2-5 pm

Holi, the festival of colors, is a major Hindu festival that celebrates both the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil on the day of the full moon. On the day of Holi, people celebrate by throwing rang (colored powder) and water on each other, and by taking part in traditional games to the sound of the dhol. The festival tradition of applying colored powder comes from Lord Krishna's complaints to his mother about the contrast between his dark skin and his consort Radha's fair color. His mother applied color to Radha's face to make appear to have the same skin color. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and colds. The playful throwing of the colored powders therefore had a medicinal significance: the colors were traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors due to their benefits on our skin. Originally, the powders that were used to celebrate Holi came from the flowers of trees that blossomed during the Spring, which had bright red flowers. Come out and celebrate this fun-filled festival with HSC for FREE! Everyone is welcome! We will be giving out FREE rang, FREE water balloons, FREE snacks, and FREE t-shirts!

It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji engage in an unseen hunt for thousands of dolphins. The nature of the work is so horrifying, a few desperate men will stop at nothing to keep it hidden from the world. But when an elite team of activists, filmmakers and free-divers embark on a covert mission to penetrate the cove, they discover that the shocking atrocities they find there are just the tip of the iceberg."
