INSPIRATIONS

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space.  He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.  This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. The striving to free oneself from this delusion is the one issue of true religion. Not to nourish it but to try to overcome it is the way to reach the attainable measure of peace of mind.

Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)  Mathematical Circles

"...compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.-"

Albert Schweitzer (German medical Missionary, Theologian, Musician and Philosopher. 1952 Nobel Peace Prize, 1875-1965)

Love alone can unite living beings so as to complete and fulfill them... for it alone joins them by what is deepest in themselves. All we need is to imagine our ability to love developing until it embraces the totality of men and the earth."
~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

ETHICS GOALS

[2A2] The second goal of the required leadership/ethics flag courses -- learn to make real-life ethical choices -- is closely related to the core purpose of the University of Texas, to transform lives for the benefit of society. It is also one of the basic education requirements of U.T.: “have experience in thinking about moral and ethical problems.”

our primary approach is the oldest: ethics guided by lovingkindness; more specifically, by three nonbinary emotions: biophilia, inner peace, joie de vivre

honi soit mottohoni soit motto[2A2f] To practice replacing fear and greed with love, compassion, tolerance, and the sympathetic imagination.

OTHER GOALS

honi soit motto[3C1] To unify the self: our goal is to maximize our potential by cultivating both sides of our brains, developing all our multiple intelligences.

The leader of the lyrebirds, having flown 1206 [A++] kilometers, is leaving the steel city of Rourkela on her way to Varanasi.
A pair of lyrebirds, having flown 1022 and 1025 [A-] kilometers, are exploring the Kathak dance and classical music of Raigarh.
Another pair of lyrebirds, having flown  992 and 996 [[B+] ]kilometers, are crossing the hot, fertile coastal plain of Odisha heading north to Sambalpur, birthplace of three Tantric cults of Buddhism.
These five lyrebirds are "racing" toward Varanasi for the award ceremony for the top three pilgrims.
====================================================================
Another lyrebird, having flown 964   [B]  kilometers, is exploring the temples of Brahmapur, but will also soon turn north toward Sambalpur and Varanasi.
Another, having flown   924 [B-]  kilometers,  is exploring the Andhra mahavishnu Temple in the Krishna district of Srikakulam .
Four lyrebirds, having flown 821 [C-]  847, 856 [C] and 875 [C+] kilometers, are relaxing at the north end of Kakinada beach which has one of longest coastlines of all Indian beaches and is famous for its mild blue waters and cold breeze all day.
Two lyrebirds, having flown  756[D] kilometers, are relaxing at the south end of Kakinada beach.
The rest are lost among the ancient Buddhist stupa and the Jain relics in Gudivada and thus there is some doubt that they will survive the pilgrimage, much less make it to Varanasi.

HIPPO:

3. "The moral progress of humanity--which is the foundation of every other kind of progress--is always slow; but that the sign of true, not causal, progress is its uninterruptedness and its continual acceleration." (1669)

I think that, with some exceptions, this sentiment is true. It seems like the media likes to push bad news on us all the time, so it's easy to become cynical and negative about the state of the world. However, if you were to look at the progress we have made over the last thousand years, or even the last hundred years, you will see how far we have come. Of course, there are cases where things are as bad as they have ever been, but today, women have the most rights that they have ever had. Child mortality is as low as it has ever been. Racial equality has improved vastly. There is certainly hope for animal rights to improve as well. As MLK said, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

4. "gentleness and mercy are not signs of weakness, but are traits of character that belong to the great and noble" (1677)

This is a lesson that is commonly taught to us by the lessons of religion and morality, but it's one that many have forgotten. However, the values that we glorify in our media and culture are ruthlessness and violence, especially considering that these are seen as more masculine qualities. Although there are a few ruthlessness might be needed, in general gentleness and mercy are the more valuable traits. Culturally, we should be rewarding these traits much more.
