INSPIRATIONS

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space.  He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.  This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. The striving to free oneself from this delusion is the one issue of true religion. Not to nourish it but to try to overcome it is the way to reach the attainable measure of peace of mind.

Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)  Mathematical Circles

"...compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.-"

ETHICS GOALS

[2A2] The second goal of the required leadership/ethics flag courses -- learn to make real-life ethical choices -- is closely related to the core purpose of the University of Texas, to transform lives for the benefit of society. It is also one of the basic education requirements of U.T.: “have experience in thinking about moral and ethical problems.”

our primary approach is the oldest: ethics guided by lovingkindness; more specifically, by three nonbinary emotions: biophilia, inner peace, joie de vivre

[1] Create a new folder on your desktop and name it with your animal name.

[2] Put a word.doc version of your original P1a, the one you uploaded to the Canvas blog site, titled "P1a," into the folder.

[3]  Make a single Word document of all the critiques your colleages made of your P1a on the Canvas blog site, titled "Critiques," and categorized according to the name of each reviewer.

[4] Make a word.doc titled "Revisions," of the penultimate draft of your project showing all the changes you made in response to all the critiques. You can use different fonts, color, underlining, bold, italics, to reveal what responses were made to what reviewer. Put a code at the top of the first page showing which kind of highlighting represents which reviewer.  Put this "Revisions.doc" into the folder.

[5] Finally, put a word.doc titled "Final draft" into the folder. This "final draft," must be double-spaced, with a title, page numbers, and footnotes at the bottom of the pages, using the University of Chicago footnote method assigned in our anthology (no bibliography). This final draft must meet all the requirements for images and citations and the last page shoujld provide word counts, both with and without quotations.

[6] Prepare an email to bump@utexas.edu and choose the folder as an attachment to the email. Send the email to me before class on the due date.

GENDER AND ANIMAL CRUELTY

FOX: "Given the obviously gender-differentiated nature of both animal exploitation and animal liberation, it is remarkable that activists do not generally proceed as if gender were an important factor in the struggle." (Gender and the Exploitation of Animals p. 1306)…  am now surprised that gender isn't brought up so much when it comes to animal cruelty and liberation considering most of the animal violence perpetuators are men whereas the voices against it are almost always women. I feel like men would feel unmanly if they joined an activist group, as if they'd be considered less of a male. The violence against animals gives males the feeling of leadership and authority over a being. In this generation we should be more adamant on attracting men to the activist groups.

"None of us chooses the meanings that constitute the texts of meat, we adhere to them...Recognizing the texts of meat is the first step in identifying the sexual politics of meat." (The Sexual Politics of Meat p. 1343)

OWL

"Resultingly, earnest vegetarians become trapped by this worldview, and while they think that all that is necessary to make converts to vegetarianism is to point out the numerous problems meat eating causes – ill health, death of animals, ecological spoilage – they do not perceive that in a meat-eating culture none of this really matters." (1343)

RT HAWK

  1. RTHawk  "We think of emotion and desire as natural, but in fact both are highly structured and learned." (1274)…. Emotions are multifaceted and have a wealth of conscious and subconscious causes…….Emotions shaped by one's culture and via socialization, which are integral aspects of how one learns to express himself….Feeling empathy is forged, developed and reinforced in childhood "Ignoring the multiplicity of masculinities and femininities leads to the erasure of experience for many people." (1289)

The stereotypes and expectations within the binary model of gender often conveniently neglect the variation among those in each category.

TOXIC MASCULINITY AND MEAT

Blogs

OTTER: One was the stock photos of women eating salad happily, and the other was of the weird Hillshire Farms commercial with the slogan "GO MEAT!" Even the ways that we socialize ourselves in terms of food seems to be gendered. Like in the commercial, for example, the people grilling the food are all men and their chant is reminiscent of a military marching chant. We are taught that meat is a very manly food, while salads, on the other hand, are for women when they are trying to be polite in the face of a man. The way that we are socialized is almost purposeful because it is a way to continue to have a cycle of men to impose cruelty on animals for our consumption, all in the name of fulfilling his duty as a man and successfully performing masculinity.

PANDA: "Meat's recognizable message includes association with the male role... the coherence it achieves as a meaningful item of food arises from patriarchal attitudes including the idea that the end justifies the means, that the objectification of other beings is a necessary part of life..." (The Sexual Politics of Meat, 1343)

This was a very interesting point that this article made. I had never thought of it before, but meat is inextricably bound to the male sex. I can see this connection being made in many aspects of my life. When cooking, it is always my dad or my boyfriend who grills the meat while my mom or I are preparing the salad or pouring the drinks. Tailgates are correlated with barbecue in my mind, which is always prepared and served by fraternities or male spirit groups. Another assertion this quote makes pertains to objectification. Immediately my mind went to this commercial:

HORSE: "Throughout the twentieth century well over 90 percent of North American hunters have been male. 'Man the Hunter' is a longstanding and highly entrenched image, and this affects our perception of other institutions of animal exploitation, such as meat production," (Luke, Brutal: Manhood and the Exploitation of Animals, 1306)

Meat is a symbol for what is not seen but is always there – patriarchal control of animals," (The Sexual Politics of Meat, 1344).

As we saw in Earthlings, man has no challenge hurting and assaulting an animal. We saw the scene with the elephant trainer in which the man tells his trainee not to touch the elephant, but to hurt it. We saw that with the men who beat the pigs, the men who threw the chickens into the walls, and the men who murdered dogs with cyanide and threw an injured dog into a trash compactor. There is a patriarchal control of animals.

BOBCAT 2. "Just as the choice of whether to join the animal rights movement can be influenced by how participation enhances or undermines our gender identities, so also our purchasing decisions are affected by their associations. While it is feminine to buy only "cruelty-free" cosmetics, in that such decision exemplifies a woman's caring responsiveness to the suffering of others, it is masculine to continue buying and consuming animal products even after being informed of how the animals are harmed because this demonstrates a man's ability to override his sympathetic hesitations." (Brutal pg. 1308) [CF. TURTLE ABOVE]

HUSKY: "By reserving animal for other animals, humans deny their kinship with nonhuman animals . . ." (1356)

Since humans refer to themselves as "humans" or "man" or "mankind", they reject the word "animal"--even though that is what we are. Using the word "animal" only in regards to furry, four-legged, or flying, or swimming, those without a voice, as "animals" makes it seem like we are so different when we really are not. Like the quote says, by doing this humans are "denying their kinship with nonhuman animals". This ties back to what I was saying about human superiority; humans think they're above nonhuman animals and, therefore, do not refer to themselves as one. This fact is quite disappointing because people seem to be out of touch with who and what they really are because they are blinded by the idea of human superiority.

FALCON:

"To him, and for many others, cereals and fruits were lower than meat on the scale of evolution, and thus appropriate foods for the other races and white women, who appeared to be lower on the scale of evolution as well" (1346).

"boys are not only told they should suppress their emotions, but that their manliness essentially depends on them doing so" (1297).

One of the ways in which humans were able to acclimatize quickly to bringing harm to other humans was to ignore the emotions they felt. Eventually, after repetition, this suppression would become unconscious and allow some sort of "emotional numbing," a technique that was common during the training of soldiers in WWII. It is not hard to see the parallels that allow men who have been told constantly throughout life to numb or suppress their emotions by a toxic masculinity. Perhaps this is the underlying foundation for how humans and especially men are able to ignore the consequences inherent to animal farming and even animal cruelty; emotional numbing has made it hard to face the spiritual and moral implications of killing animals needlessly.

RACCOON

"If a diet of beans and grains has been the basis for sustenance for the majority of the world until recently then meat is not essential."  (1344)

"...I am dismayed by the failure of feminists to recognize the gender issues embedded in the eating of animals." (1344)

FEMALES ASSOCIATED WITH ANIMALS

CHEETAH:    Animals are not considered as humans and women are connected to having feelings for animals and non-living things. "A stereotypical picture of femininity includes the expectation that a woman will tend to notice and respond to the needs of others, including animals", showing signs of weakness is linked to women when they show emotions toward animals and objects (1339).

One way people unknowingly link women to animals is by referring certain habitats to showing signs of weakness and inferiority. One example is by eating habits. Women are supposed to be the vegetarians only eating salads and pasta; saving the meat eating trait for men. "This explanation - which divided the world into intellectually superior meat eaters and inferior plant eaters- accounted for the conquering of other cultures by the English", linking women once again to being inferior to men (1346).

HIPPO: 1) "A survey taken at the 1990 March on Washington for the Animals found females comprising 80% of the activists." (1305)
