Relate to the practice of meditation: tower m otto

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space.  He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.  This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.  Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.  Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.

Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)  Mathematical Circles

----------------------------------

Pay attention, then you will know there are other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but  sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down.

David Foster Wallace, Commencement Speech

---------------------

Love alone can unite living beings so as to complete and fulfill them... for it alone joins them by what is deepest in themselves. All we need is to imagine our ability to love developing until it embraces the totality of men and the earth."

Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die

You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command

Varanasi map sm.jpg

The leader of the blind moles, having tunneled 1273 [A++] kilometers, is leaving the steel city of Rourkela on her way to Varanasi.
The next mole, having tunneled 1215 [A++] kilometers, is exploring the Kathak dance and classical music of Raigarh.
The next moles, having tunneled 1171 and 1186 [A+]kilometers, are crossing the hot, fertile coastal plain of Odisha heading north to Sambalpur, birthplace of three Tantric cults of Buddhism.
These four moles are "racing" toward Varanasi for the award ceremony for the top three pilgrims.
Another pair of blind moles, having tunneled 986 [B+]  and 1013 [A-]  kilometers, are
exploring the temples of Brahmapur, but will also soon turn north toward Sambalpur and Varanasi.
A third pair of moles, having tunneled  904 [B-] and 963 [B] kilometers,  are exploring the Andhra mahavishnu Temple in the Krishna district of Srikakulam .
The fourth pair of  moles, having tunneled 834 [C-] and 861 [C] kilometers, are relaxing at the north end of Kakinada beach which has one of longest coastlines of all Indian beaches and is famous for its mild blue waters and cold breeze all day.
Three moles, having tunneled  751[D], 773 [D+], and 775[D+]  kilometers, are relaxing at the south end of Kakinada beach.
One,  having journeyed 663 kilometers , is lost among the ancient Buddhist stupa and the Jain relics in Gudivada.

DIVERSITY EXPERIENCE: TANIGUCHI: Nature and the Orient, the Asian-American experience " It doesn't matter what the professors teach, it's what the place teaches...." "read" with your bare feet.

Goals: Peace vs. stress this time of semester; Finding a sanctuary; Leadership, Taniguchi as role model ; use both Left brain right brain; Discovery/ Experiential Learning; Semiotics; Diversity

Activities: BAREFOOT WALKING and STILL MEDITATIONS IN THE GARDEN

Your experience here in this garden was a test of your ability to ignore distractions, maintain a "peaceful mind," and concentrate on "reading" the garden. What is meant by that word? Taniguchi: "When a man, with such pure appreciation in his peaceful mind tries to compose with stones, grass, and water in order to create one unified beauty—the formation is called a 'garden.'"

Write about about how you "read" this garden, perhaps through all your senses.

Possible Topics:

"It doesn't matter what the professors teach, it's what theplace teaches...." What does this place teach you?

Double points: "one unified beauty" How does reading this garden relate to reading "paper" works that express our course themes of "Only Connect" and "Hammer Your Thoughts Into Unity" from Woman Warrior to our first readings of last semester.

How does reading this garden communicate the "peaceful coexistence of all the elements of nature"? How is this garden a "symbol of universal peace"?

Do you read any ethical calls or responsibilities in the garden? "By observing the genuine peaceful nature of the garden, I believe that we should be able to knock on the door of our conscience," . . . .

Do you read any spirituality in the garden? "Today we have lost the healing effect from that precious medicinal capsule which is our religious teachings" . . . . .
