MENA. The U.S. Department of State is the lead U.S. foreign
affairs agency and is responsible for implementing the President's
foreign policies. The U.S. has diplomatic relations with more than
170 countries and maintains about 260 embassies, consulates, and
missions around the world. You may find bios of its

- US Agency for International Development's strategic objective
is the transition to and consolidation of democratic regimes
throughout the world -- as an end in itself and because it is a
critical element in promoting sustainable development. It was
folded into the State Department. For the Middle East there is a
special Middle East Partnership Initiative -
MEPI.
- USIA's mission is to understand, inform and influence foreign
publics in promotion of the national interest; and to broaden the
dialogue between Americans, their institutions and their
counterparts abroad. It was folded into the State Department.
- The National Security Agency/Central Security Service is
responsible for the centralized coordination, direction, and
performance of highly specialized technical functions in support
of U.S. Government activities to protect U.S. communications and
produce foreign intelligence information. It is not to be confused
with the CIA (see below). It has a much bigger budget than the CIA
but is under the overall direction of CIA director.
