Welcome to the debate about globalization. Although this is more
the focus of another course I sometimes teach, it is also
relevant to us for at least two reasons. Globalization fosters
international civil society, articulated by transnational NGOs, some of
which bitterly oppose globalization - remember Seattle? Secondly,
private sector growth promoted by globalization is an economic
underpinning for domestic civil societies - in the Middle East
as elsewhere. So here you have the arguments from World Bank
types against the anti-globalists. CH
