"Only connect! . . .Live in fragments no longer.Ó  E. M. Forster, Howards End (1910), ch. 22

ÔOne day when I was twenty-three or twenty-four this sentence seemed to form in my head, without my willing it, much as sentences form when we are half-asleep, ÔHammer your thoughts into unityÕ. For days I could think of nothing else and for years I tested all I did by that sentence [...]Ó William Butler Yeats (cited in Frank Tuohy, Yeats, 1976, p.51 )

YOUR FINAL EXAM:

Remember, when the course began, we emphasized the following sentence in the official course description: "Grades will be based in part on meeting the two expectations employers have of college graduates: time management, and the ability to read, analyze, and follow complex, detailed directions." This assignment is your final exam on your ability to meet these two expectations, with the added bonus of testing your proofreading skills.

Portfolios

TO SEE HOW WELL YOUR PORTFOLIO IS WORKING AFTER IT HAS BEEN UPLOADED BY ME GO TO

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/w/

If something is not working and you want to check the link on the site, put your cursor over the link (but do not click) and look at the bottom lower left of your browser (tested on Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome). At the very bottom left you will see the link. The clues to why it is not working are probably there, assuming the files are where they belong and every detail of each file name matches exactly the name in the link).

Office hours Dec. 6: 10-11:30, Dec. 6: 1-3 in WCH 4.104 Dec. 8: 3-6 Dec. 12: 10-12 Dec. 13: 10-12, AND/OR EMAIL FOR AN APPOINTMENT

HOW TO SEND CHANGES AND ADDITIONS TO ME VIA EMAIL:

First of all, send only those files that are new or changed. (If you also send files that are already in your folder and are not to be changed or replaced most likely your email attachment will be too large to be accepted. Even if it is, I will not be able to upload the folder from home as my link speed is too slow. ) Secondly, tell me in the email exactly what is to be uploaded to which folder.

HOW TO SEND BIG FILES (SUCH AS A COMPLETE PORTFOLIO):

UPLOAD THE FILE TO A PROGRAM SUCH AS DROP BOX or SEND SPACE WHICH STORES IT TEMPORARILY UNTIL I AM ABLE TO DOWNLOAD IT. THEN EMAIL ME WITH THE INFORMATION I NEED TO DOWNLOAD IT. (NOTE: I WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD WHEN I AM IN MY OFFICE AT THE TIMES LISTED ABOVE.)

(DropBox will require you to download and install an application and then register with them to activate your site.)

OVERVIEW: THE REQUIREMENTS

1. First requirement: Your portfolio WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and you will FAIL THE COURSE IF THERE ANY LINKS TO THE WEB, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE LINKS TO OUR COURSE WEBSITE and links to videos that can not be seen in any other way. Hyperlinks to files on blogger.com, wordpress.com, Blackboard, etc. will mean the portfolio is not acceptable.

2. Second requirement:You can not include files that an internet browser such as Firefox can not display in the browser itself, such as files ending in .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt, .pdf, .mht, .zip, , .sitx, etc. If you do, your portfolio WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and YOU WILL FAIL THE COURSE.

3. Third requirement: WORKING INDEX FILES, such as the one you made for the Website grade, with every link to each of at least eight categories working properly, OR YOU FAIL THE COURSE. (If you are using iWeb or Publisher or some such program you will not see the index file itself. Just make sure you have links to eight categories.)

4. USE ONLY YOUR ANIMAL NAME ON YOUR PORTFOLIO AND ALL DOCUMENTS INCLUDED THEREIN. REMOVE ALL REFERENCES TO YOUR ORIGINAL NAME AND AS MUCH OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE: names of family members, addresses, personal identifiers such as social security numbers, and personal characteristics or other information that make your identity easily traceable. THE SAME PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED FOR THE NAMES OF OTHER CLASS MEMBERS. For example, in your pages of critiques, in your leadership lesson plans, in your blogs, all names should be animal, not original names. Obviously, blogs should not begin "Posted by [real name]." You can just delete that sentence in all your blogs.

5. PROOFREAD THE "FINAL" VERSION OF THE PORTFOLIO!

LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE PROOFREAD THE "FINAL" VERSION OF THE PORTFOLIO ON OUR WEBSITE. WHEN YOU HAVE DONE SO, I WILL CALCULATE THE FINAL GRADE AND NO MORE REVISIONS WILL BE ALLOWED.

Turning the Initial Website into the Portfolio "the easy way."

First of all, now that you have an idea of the assignment, you may wish to switch to Dreamweaver, iWeb, or Publisher. Only Dreamweaver makes it easy to make changes: so that would be my first choice. If you use iWeb or Publisher make sure you choose the option "Save to Folder" because you will not be uploading your portfolio directly to the web. Instead, you will simply be giving me the folder to upload.

Now that you have the first few links on your website working, in the future you can change the hyperlinks so that they have what are called "hard" as opposed to "relative" links. (However, the only way to test your portfolio using this method is for me to upload it to your website, thus activating these URLs.)

HOW TO BUILD A PORTFOLIO ONCE YOU HAVE HAVE A WEBSITE FOLDER ON OUR COURSE WEBSITE:

HOW TO PUT PICTURES AND MOVIES IN YOUR PORTFOLIO

WHY MUST YOU INCLUDE PICTURES AND MOVIES?

Role of Class Pictures in the Course

The only pictures and movies you will be required to include are those on our course website, namely those at these two locations:

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/images/

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/movies/

To insert these pictures and movies you need to use a command like "insert image" or "insert video" and then supply the hyperlink to that particular image or video, such as

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/images/FalconAward.jpg

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/movies/ClayPit1.mov

However, for the images the result should be not the actual hyperlink as above, but a box (set the width to 400 pixels or so) in which the multimedia appears, such as  the one below (only you should supply captions as well.)

;lk;l

You must link to these files rather than putting them all on your jump drive, especially large files like the movies. Remember, to connect to a website file or image, the link must be the full URL for each file you use, as in

http://www.la.utexas.edu/users/bump/603A11/images/Generations.jpg

HOW TO INCLUDE BLOGS

The procedure for blogs is the opposite of that for images and movies. Because your blogs are in very temporary locations, we do not want the blogs in your portfolio vanishing when the originals or parts of the originals vanish.

Hence your portfolio WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and you will FAIL THE COURSE IF ANY PART OF YOUR PROJECTS OR BLOGS ARE DEPENDENT ON ANY LINKS TO THE WEB.

There is a simple way to find out if you have links to the web that will make your portfolio unacceptable. Take your jump drive (with your complete portfolio on it) to someone else's computer. Disconnect that computer from the internet: turn off the wireless, remove the ethernet cable, etc. Now open up a browser on that computer and go to "open file" and open the index file on your jump drive. Notice what works and what does not work. The only features that should not work are the links to the course website. If your blogs don't work because they are linked to the internet, or your project pictures don't appear because they are hyperlinks rather than picture files, or whatever, your portfolio is unacceptable. Your need to replace those hyperlinks to the internet in your projects and/or blogs with links to files on your jump drive.

So, first, collect and/or create all your files. Complete files are required for blogs, projects (and critiques). All of these kinds of files, must be on the jump drive and linked to the index.

If you have the html files in your jump drive that do not include the images, or you do not have folders of images to go with them, when your html file is selected the computer begins linking back to blogspot.com or whatever, making the whole portfolio unacceptable and resulting in an F in the course.

Hyperlinks to files on blogger.com, wordpress.com, Blackboard, Facebook, etc. will mean the portfolio is not acceptable. To avoid giving the impression that your images are just hyperlinks to files available only elsewhere on the internet, do not credit the source of the image by making the image itself a hyperlink to the internet location. If you want to indicate where you got the file (not required). just type the URL below the image but do not activate that URL by making it a hyperlink. Even better would be to list the sources of the images in a list elsewhere in the portfolio.

To avoid such links, when you go back to blogger.com and view your blog in, say, Firefox, go to "File" and then select "Save Page As" and then "Web Page Complete." The result should be an html file* and, sometimes, an accompanying folder of image files (the same kind of result as choosing "Save as Web Page" for a Word document). Rename this version of your blog if necessary so that you know which one it is later on. The resulting html file AND the folder of images, if there is one, must be put on your jump drive.

How to test your portfolio to see if there are links to the internet that should not be there? Turn off your internet connection and select a blog or project and see if the images are still there. If so, great; if not try again to read and follow directions. Do this for each blog and each project.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NEXT (or earlier): USE ONLY YOUR ANIMAL NAME ON YOUR PORTFOLIO AND ALL DOCUMENTS INCLUDED THEREIN.

The visual presentation grade will be low if you do not supply captions, or if you simply put all the photos in a folder somewhere with no order or organization instead of organizing them chronologically or in some other way and selecting some to show up where appropriate in the portfolio. Also, for maximum credit, the pictures themselves should appear on their own, not as links which must then be selected by the reader.

Grades: To get a B on the portfolio you need to meet all the basic requirements almost perfectly, including detailed table of contents/indexing and linking.

Grades: to get an A on you need to go beyond that to an achievement in visual rhetoric. Think of this as a portfolio you will be citing in an application to an architectural or leadership magazine, seeking employment in competition with many others. You would be well advised to have it all typed in one way or another, perfectly proofread, illustrated, etc. and very professional in appearance. Pay special attention to unity and to Effective Visual Design (Faigley).
